Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about VAT returns and registration

What is the VAT registration threshold?

The VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in any rolling 12-month period. You must also register if you expect to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. You can register voluntarily below the threshold, which can make sense if most of your customers are VAT registered.

When are VAT returns due?

Most businesses file quarterly. The return and payment are due 1 calendar month and 7 days after the end of each VAT period. For example, for a quarter ending 31 March, the deadline is 7 May.

Do I need Making Tax Digital software for VAT?

Yes. All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file VAT returns using MTD-compatible software. We work with the main packages and can set you up or move you across.

What happens if I file a VAT return late?

HMRC uses a points-based system. Each late return earns a penalty point, and once you reach the threshold (4 points for quarterly filers) you get a £200 penalty, with a further £200 for each later late return. Late payments are charged separately, along with interest.

Should I use the Flat Rate Scheme?

It depends on your sector and costs. The Flat Rate Scheme can simplify VAT for businesses with low costs, but businesses that spend little on goods may pay more under it. We compare the options using your figures before you decide.
