Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about limited company accounts
When are my company accounts due?
Private limited companies must file annual accounts with Companies House within 9 months of the end of their accounting period. A company's first accounts are due 21 months after the date it was incorporated. The Corporation Tax return (CT600) is due to HMRC within 12 months of the period end, and any Corporation Tax is payable 9 months and 1 day after the period end.
What is the difference between company accounts and a Corporation Tax return?
Statutory accounts show your company's financial position and are filed with Companies House (and HMRC). The CT600 Corporation Tax return calculates the tax due on your profits and is filed only with HMRC. Most companies need both every year, and we prepare them together.
Does my company qualify as a micro-entity?
For financial years beginning on or after 6 April 2025, a company is a micro-entity if it meets at least two of these: turnover of £1 million or less, balance sheet total of £500,000 or less, and 10 or fewer employees. Micro-entities can file simpler accounts with less detail on the public record.
Do dormant companies need to file accounts?
Yes. A dormant company must still file annual accounts and a confirmation statement with Companies House, even if it has not traded. Dormant accounts are simple and inexpensive to prepare.
What are the penalties for filing accounts late?
Companies House charges an automatic penalty: £150 if up to 1 month late, £375 for 1 to 3 months, £750 for 3 to 6 months and £1,500 for more than 6 months. Penalties double if accounts are late two years in a row.
