Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Self-Assessment tax returns in Glasgow

When is the Self-Assessment deadline?

For the 2025/26 tax year (6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026), the online return and any tax owed are due by 31 January 2027. Paper returns are due by 31 October 2026. If you make payments on account, the second payment is due by 31 July.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

HMRC charges an automatic £100 penalty, even if you owe no tax. After 3 months, £10 a day is added for up to 90 days (£900). At 6 and 12 months, a further penalty of £300 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is higher, is added each time. Interest is also charged on late payments.

Does Making Tax Digital affect my tax return?

From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and is planned to fall to £20,000 from April 2028. We can set you up and handle the quarterly updates.

What information do I need to give you?

Usually your UTR number, P60 or P45 for any employment, records of business income and expenses, rental income and costs, bank interest, dividends, pension contributions and Gift Aid donations. We send you a simple checklist so nothing is missed.

I've never filed before. Can you register me with HMRC?

Yes. If you became self-employed or started receiving untaxed income, you must register for Self-Assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which it started. We can register you, obtain your UTR and file your first return.

How much does an accountant charge for a tax return?

It depends on your income sources and how organised your records are. We offer a free initial consultation and give you a clear quote before any work starts, so there are no surprises.
